Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The reach
The Severn at Ashford is the river below Pindari Dam in the north of New South Wales, running through the granite and grazing country toward its junction with the Dumaresq to form the Macintyre, with the village of Ashford, a river reserve and long, quiet reaches of rock, gravel and timber either way. It is cod and perch water of the Border Rivers kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Ashford supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the rock pools, the snags and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; golden perch fish the same water from spring to autumn; eel-tailed catfish feed in summer; silver perch and the protected natives go back; and carp are present under the DPIRD rules. Where to fish it
The river reserve and the crossings near the village give bank access to the pools, and a kayak covers the reaches of rock and timber toward the Dumaresq junction; the deep pools below the rock bars are the cod water and the gravel runs fish for perch when the river is up. The reach below the Pindari wall is cold-water release fishing.
