The Brisbane at Linville
Linville is the small upper-valley town on the Brisbane River, on the old railway line north of Esk, where the upper river runs over gravel through grazing country and forest before it reaches Lake Somerset and Wivenhoe. Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish of the upper Brisbane, in the pools and along the snags on small lures, with golden perch and catfish also caught. The Queensland size and bag limits apply; the tidal bass closure does not reach this far up.
Where to fish it
The crossings and reserves along the upper valley road give access to the river, and anglers walk and wade the gravel runs between the pools.

Linville has a pub and camping along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, and Esk has more. Bring light bass gear and wading shoes.
The river through the year
At Linville the Brisbane River is near the top of its valley, a small gravel river with riffles, runs and deeper pools under casuarinas, running south past Moore and Gregors Creek to Lake Wivenhoe. It is at its lowest and clearest in late winter and spring, and the summer storms bring the rises that colour it for a few days at a time. The bass here are fish that have moved upstream from the stocked lakes, so their numbers vary with the flows; eel-tailed catfish and spangled perch live in the pools too. The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail passes through Linville and follows the river, and a light rod carried on a walk or a ride is the way to fish it. Summer evenings with a surface lure are the best time on these pools.
