The lake
Borumba Dam holds Yabba Creek in the Mary Valley west of Imbil and Gympie, a timbered impoundment under the Conondale and Jimna ranges with a camping ground, a ramp and long arms of drowned forest, home of the Mary River cod hatchery program and one of the state’s best bass and saratoga lakes. It supplies the Mary Valley irrigators and draws down through the dry; the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are stocked and school in the deep water off the points in winter and spread along the timber in summer; saratoga fish the surface along the drowned forest at dawn and dusk; golden perch are stocked and fish the points from spring; Mary River cod are stocked, protected and returned, with the lake a stronghold of the species; and red claw are a pot fishery. The stocking group publishes its releases.
Where to fish it
The camping ground and the ramp at the wall launch onto a lake that is timber in every direction, so the fishing is a boat and kayak fishery of casting to trees up the Yabba and Kingaham arms; the deep water off the points near the wall holds the winter bass schools. Bank fishing from the camp works at dusk, and the timber makes daylight navigation worth learning before a night session.
