The reach
The Mary at Gympie is the fresh river above the tidal reaches at Maryborough, running through the old gold town under the Kidd Bridge and the Normanby bridge past the river parks and the Gympie weir, with the Mary Valley reaches upstream toward Kandanga and Imbil. It is bass and perch water with the state’s rarest cod in it, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the Gympie weir supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Species and seasons
Australian bass fish the snags and the deep bends from spring to autumn under the state’s bass rules; golden perch are stocked and fish the same water; the Mary River cod, endangered, is protected and must go back untouched, as is the lungfish; saratoga and eel-tailed catfish are present; and the river’s closed season for bass in the Mary applies as the Queensland Government publishes it, linked here. Carp are few.
Where to fish it
The river parks and the bridges give bank access through Gympie, the weir pool fishes from a kayak, and the Mary Valley reaches upstream are reached from the road crossings; the deep bends and the snags are the bass and perch water. Night fishing with surface lures along the snags is the summer method.

Above Gympie the Mary winds through the Mary Valley past Kandanga and Imbil toward its headwaters in the Conondale Range, a smaller river of pools and rock bars that the rail trail and the road crossings reach; Borumba Dam, on Yabba Creek off the valley, is the bass lake of the district and has its own page, and the Mary River cod hatchery program that stocks it began in this valley.
