The Cam River above Somerset
The Cam River runs from the hills of the north-west to the sea at Somerset, just west of Burnie; the gauge sits at the Somerset water supply intake on the river above the town. The Bureau of Meteorology reads the Cam’s level at that intake, and its gauge supplies the 30-day chart on this page. Burnie has its own page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are the fish of the Cam, in the pools and runs on the fly, lures and bait. The Cam follows the Inland Fishing Code’s general river season, from the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, which the species card computes, and the general bag of five fish over 220 mm.
Where to fish it
The roads above Somerset give access to the river; much of the valley is private farmland and forest.
Planning a visit
Somerset and Burnie have supplies and accommodation. Pack light trout gear and a rain jacket for the north-west weather.
The river through the year
The Cam drains the wet hills behind Burnie, where the rain comes off Bass Strait through the winter, so the river runs full and cold from late autumn to spring and falls back through the drier summer months. The trout season opens in early August when the river is often high and coloured; the fish are near the edges and in the slower water then, and worms and wet flies take them. As the water clears and warms in October and November, the trout move into the runs and feed on the hatches, and the late spring and early summer evenings are the best of the season. In a dry February the river can run low and clear, and the pools under the trees and the early mornings are the places and times to fish. Above Somerset the river is small and bush-lined, so short casts and a careful approach work better than long ones.
