The Inglis at Flowerdale
The Inglis River runs from the hills of the north-west down through farmland to the sea at Wynyard on the Bass Strait coast; Flowerdale is the farming locality on its lower reaches just inland from the town. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Flowerdale gauge has not reported recent readings to Water Data Online, so this page carries no level chart. Burnie has its own page.
Species and seasons
Wild brown trout are the fish of the Inglis, with sea-run trout moving up from the estuary in spring, on the fly, lures and bait. The Inglis is not listed separately in the Inland Fishing Code, so it follows the general river rules, the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card, with a bag of five fish over 220 mm. The Inglis is also one of the rivers opened to whitebait for a short spring season under the Code.
Where to fish it
The crossings and reserves along the lower Inglis around Flowerdale give access to the river, and the estuary at Wynyard is a separate water under the sea fishing rules. The runs and the pools near the Flowerdale crossings are the trout water, and sea-run fish push up to them from the Wynyard estuary in spring, when a small spinner cast across the current is the method.
Planning a visit
Flowerdale is just inland from Wynyard on the north-west coast, and Wynyard and Burnie have tackle and supplies. Bring light trout gear, and check the whitebait season in the Code if you plan to fish the lower river in spring.
