The lake
Lake Bellfield lies on Fyans Creek immediately above Halls Gap in the heart of the Grampians, a deep, cold GWMWater storage between the Wonderland and Mount William ranges that supplies the Wimmera towns, with a picnic area and shore access near the wall and the Grampians Road along its western shore. It is on the VFA’s list of year-round cod fisheries and a trout water as well, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge on the lake supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are stocked and open all year under the VFA exemption for the Wimmera basin and the specific listing of Bellfield, which the species card shows with the rule; they hold along the rock walls and the drowned timber in the warm months. Brown and rainbow trout are stocked and fish the cool months along the edges and the drop-offs; golden perch are stocked; redfin are present; and the Wimmera pipeline’s draw keeps the level moving. The mountain streams around the lake follow the stream closure.
Where to fish it
The picnic area and the wall give bank access to the deepest water, and the road along the western shore gives casting access to the rock and the timber; boats are restricted on the supply lake and the fishing is a bank fishery, best at dawn in the cool months for trout and at dusk in summer for cod along the walls.
