The lake
Lake Fyans is a GWMWater off-river storage at the eastern foot of the Grampians between Stawell and Halls Gap, filled by channel from the ranges, a shallow, open lake with a holiday park, ramps and foreshore camping and a view of the mountains that makes it a holiday fishery as much as an angler’s one. It is Wimmera-basin water, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge on the lake supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown and rainbow trout are stocked and fish the edges and the drop-offs from autumn to spring on bait, lures and flies; redfin are the numbers fish through the year; golden perch and Murray cod have been stocked and hold in the timber and along the walls in the warm months, the cod open all year under the VFA’s Wimmera basin exemption computed on the species card; and carp are present with the VFA rules. There is no trout closure on the lake.
Where to fish it
The holiday park and the foreshore camping on the northern shore and the ramps give bank and boat access; the drowned timber along the western shore and the drop-off off the wall are the natives’ water in the warm months, and the open edges fish for trout at dawn in the cool ones. A kayak covers the lake and stays out of the wind along the shore.
