The reach
The Wimmera at Horsham is the river through the Wimmera’s capital, held into a long pool by the town weir past the Botanic Gardens, the river parks and the caravan park, running on through the red gums toward Dimboola and Jeparit and the terminal lakes. It is cod and perch water in a town, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Horsham supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the snags, the weir and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, and the Wimmera River itself is excluded from the VFA’s Wimmera basin exemption, so the September to November closure applies here and the species card computes it; golden perch are the everyday fish from spring to autumn; redfin are the numbers fish; and carp are numerous under the VFA rules. Where to fish it
The Botanic Gardens, the river parks and the caravan park give bank access to the weir pool, the water below the weir is the cod hole, and a kayak covers the river downstream toward Dimboola; the deep outside bends and the timber are the cod water. Night fishing along the pool’s snags is the summer method.
