The Wimmera at Dimboola
Dimboola is the Wimmera town on the Wimmera River at the edge of the Little Desert, where the river winds between river red gums past the town weir and the riverside reserves on its way north to Lake Hindmarsh. Species and seasons
Murray cod, golden perch and redfin are the fish of the Wimmera at Dimboola, the cod and yellowbelly in the snags and the weir pool on lures and bait, redfin in the slower water. The VFA exempts the Wimmera basin waters from the Murray cod closed season, but not the Wimmera River itself, so cod are closed here from 1 September to 30 November; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The riverside reserves and the weir at Dimboola give bank access, and a kayak covers the weir pool between the red gums. The Little Desert National Park across the river has its own rules. The weir pool in the town and the red gum snags below it hold the cod, and the slow bends upstream are the yellowbelly and redfin water in summer; bait fished close to the timber works well.

Dimboola is on the Western Highway between Horsham and the South Australian border, with a caravan park, supplies and the riverside reserves. Bring cod lures and bait for yellowbelly and redfin, and remember the spring cod closure on the river.
