Geraldton and its coast
Geraldton is the port of Western Australia’s mid-west, on Champion Bay with the Abrolhos Islands offshore, the Chapman and Greenough rivers either side, and a coast of beaches, reef and limestone points running north to Coronation Beach and south to Cape Burney. The fishing is the beaches and the groynes in front of the town, the harbour walls and the marina, the river mouths, the inshore reef for the boats and, for those who make the crossing, the Abrolhos with their coral trout, dhufish and pink snapper under strict rules. Species and seasons
Tailor are the beach fish of the mid-west, from the groynes and the gutters at dusk through the warmer months; herring, whiting and skippy fish the beaches and the harbour all year; squid work the weed off the groynes and the marina in spring and autumn; and mulloway are the night fish of the river mouths and the beaches. Spanish mackerel run the reef in the cooler months, pink snapper and dhufish fish the deeper reef for the boats under the West Coast demersal rules, and the Chapman and Greenough estuaries give bream and black bream. The Abrolhos have their own management with seasonal closures.
