Jurien Bay and the islands
Jurien Bay is the town on the Turquoise Coast between Perth and Geraldton, with the jetty and the marina, the sheltered bay behind the islands and reefs, the beaches running north and south, the Jurien Bay Marine Park with its sanctuary zones and the crayfish fleet. Species and seasons
Whiting fish the bay sand and the beaches all year and are the town’s fish; tailor run the beaches in the cooler months; herring and garfish fish the jetty; squid work the jetty weed and the lights; dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper fish the reef for the boats out of the marina, under the West Coast demersal closure; Spanish mackerel run the islands in summer; and the beach gives the odd mulloway at night. The western rock lobster season is the coast’s other fishery, licensed.
Where to fish it
Jurien Bay jetty on the foreshore is the walk-on mark for herring, squid and whiting, fished at night under the lights, and the sheltered sand inside the reef either side of the marina is the whiting water for wading and small boats; the beaches north to Sandy Cape and south to Cervantes are the tailor sand at dawn. The ramp is at the marina, and the reef and the islands are a short run for the dhufish boats.
