The record chase's home field

In the early 1990s Castaic produced a string of bass over 20 pounds: within ounces of the world record: and the mystique never left. The formula remains: Florida genetics, planted rainbow trout as forage, and deep, clear structure. Every swimbait fisherman in California learned their trade here or wishes they had.

Trout-bait economics

Winter-spring trout plants ring the dinner bell: giants shadow the stocking truck's schedule, and 8-12-inch trout imitations slow-rolled off the ramps' points and the dam produce the year's heavyweights. The discipline is brutal: long hours, few bites, life-changing potential: Castaic wrote the swimbait grind's rulebook.

Beyond the giants

The lake fishes well conventionally: spotted bass and largemouth on the main-lake points (drop shots, jigs at 15-40 ft), stripers that crash the trout plants alongside the bass, crappie in the lagoon, and planted rainbows for the trolling fleet. The afterbay lagoon below the dam adds a family-friendly stillwater with its own stocking program.

Working the reservoir

Two launch areas serve the main lake (east and west ramps); the lagoon launches separately. Wind funnels up the canyon most afternoons: mornings rule. Quagga inspections apply: arrive clean and dry. The lake's level swings with State Water Project moves: big drawdowns concentrate fish on the remaining structure and reshape every waypoint.

Common questions

Did Castaic really almost break the bass world record?

Yes: fish of 22 lb 0 oz and a string of 20s in 1990-91 came within ounces of Perry's record. The genetics and the trout forage that built them remain in the lake.

When is the swimbait bite at Castaic?

December-April around trout plants: big baits near the stocking points at dawn. It is low-odds, high-stakes fishing: the regulars measure success in seasons, not sessions.
