The river of the southern Sierra

The Kern drains Mount Whitney's backside through granite canyons toward the desert: California's southernmost major trout river and its most bipolar: gentle stocked reaches by the campgrounds, wild-trout canyons above, and whitewater that demands the respect the warning signs plead for.

Two Kerns

The Lower Kern (below Isabella) runs rafting water with stocked pockets: the Upper Kern (Kernville to the Johnsondale bridge and beyond) is the fishery: stocked rainbows at the pullouts, wild fish between, and the special-regulation upper miles (artificials, reduced limits) holding the river's honest natives. The 20 miles above Fairview fish as the southern Sierra's finest roadside trout water.

Reading the Kern year

Snowmelt owns April-June (big years bury the river till July): the prime runs July-October: attractor dries in the pockets, crawler-and-spinner work at the stocked bridges, evening caddis everywhere. Winter offers low-water solitude on the wild reaches: midday nymphing between granite shadows.

Canyon practicalities

Highway 99/178 and the Kernville road ladder the access: campgrounds anchor the stocked culture: and the river's drowning statistics are real: the Kern kills the casual: fish it, don't swim it, and mind the flows (releases from Isabella shift the lower river fast).
