Behind the resorts

Rehoboth Bay spreads shallow and wide behind Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach, connected to Indian River Bay and the ocean through Indian River Inlet. It is a classic mid-Atlantic back bay: eelgrass beds, sand shoals, channel edges and marsh creeks, holding summer flounder, weakfish, speckled trout, striped bass, bluefish and, increasingly, redfish as southern species push north.

Flounder and the tides

Summer flounder are the mainstay: drift the channel edges and drop-offs with squid-and-minnow rigs or bucktails tipped with Gulp, working the moving tide. The bay is shallow enough that tide stage governs where fish hold: outgoing water concentrates them near the channels and the inlet, while flood tides spread them onto the flats and grass edges.

Trout, stripers and the seasons

Speckled trout and weakfish work the grass beds and deeper holes, best in fall on soft plastics and popping corks. Striped bass push into the bay in spring and fall, following bait around the inlet and the channel edges. Small boats, kayaks and even wading anglers can reach productive water: this is friendly, protected fishing when the ocean is rough.

Ramps at Massey’s Landing, Dewey Beach and the Indian River Marina serve the bays, with extensive kayak access along the shorelines. Summer brings heavy recreational boat traffic given the resort setting: fish early or in the shoulder seasons. Rehoboth and Dewey provide every service, and the ocean surf is minutes away when the bay is slow.
