The spotted bass capital of the East

Lake Sidney Lanier holds arguably the best magnum spotted bass fishery east of the Rockies: five-pounders are genuinely common, built on deep clear water, blueback herring, and thirty years of brush-pile culture. The lake's 692 miles of shoreline north of Atlanta carry more registered boats than any lake in Georgia, yet the fishing keeps getting better.

How Lanier fishes

This is offshore, electronics-forward fishing. Spots suspend over brush and standing timber on 25-45 ft humps: drop shots, underspins and jerkbaits over the tops. Herring spawns pull them shallow at dawn in spring (topwater on clay points), and ditches and bluff walls in winter. The striper game runs year-round: freelines and planer boards in the creeks in winter, downlines 60 ft deep over the river channel in summer.

Practicalities of a busy lake

Summer weekends belong to pleasure boats after 10 AM: fish dawn, then hide in the rivers or quit. Buford Dam releases cold water into the Chattahoochee below (a trout fishery in Georgia!): the dam area itself holds bait and stripers all summer. Watch the DRT (Dawsonville) pool level: full pool is 1,071 ft and swings matter for ramp usability.
