Fishing Calcasieu Lake: the full guide

The trout lake

Calcasieu Lake, known universally as Big Lake, spreads across 60 square miles of southwest Louisiana between Lake Charles and the Gulf. It is arguably the finest speckled trout fishery in the state and one of the best in the country for large trout: oyster reefs, deep channels and tidal flow through Calcasieu Pass create the conditions that grow gator specks past seven pounds.

Specks on the reefs

The reef fishery defines Big Lake: drift the oyster reefs with soft plastics and live bait under corks, or wade the shorelines and the reef edges for the biggest fish. Spring and fall are the trophy windows, when large trout move onto the reefs and shorelines. Summer holds fish deeper on the reefs and in the channels, and winter concentrates them in the deep holes.

Redfish and flounder

Redfish work the shorelines, marsh drains and the reef edges, taking spoons, plastics and cracked crab: the ship channel side and the marsh to the east hold them consistently. Flounder stack near the pass and channel edges in fall, and black drum fill the deeper water. The variety means a slow trout day rarely means a slow day overall.

Southwest Louisiana logistics

Ramps at Hebert’s Landing, Long Beach and around Cameron and Hackberry serve the lake, with a large guide fleet based in Hackberry. Wind is the main variable: the lake is shallow and open, and a strong south wind makes it rough and muddy. Tides matter as much as time of day. Lake Charles provides full services 30 minutes north.
