The border estuary

Sabine Lake sits astride the Texas-Louisiana line where the Sabine and Neches rivers pour into 90 square miles of shallow, fertile estuary: the least-pressured major bay on the upper Texas coast. Fresh river water meets gulf salt through Sabine Pass, feeding shrimp-rich marsh drains on the Louisiana shore and oyster reefs mid-lake. The payoff is quality: speckled trout with real shoulders, redfish flooding the marsh, and fall flounder runs that rank with any in Texas.

Trout and the birds

From late spring through fall, working the birds is the signature Sabine game: shrimp migrations pull gulls and terns over feeding schools mid-lake, and a soft plastic under the melee catches until your arms quit. Bigger trout hold on the reefs and the revetment walls: wade or drift the flats at Blue Buck Point and Coffee Ground Cove with topwaters at dawn. The ship channel edge fishes all summer on live shad.

Redfish in the drains

The Louisiana marsh side (Willow, Johnson and Three Bayous country) is a redfish machine: fish the drains on falling tides with spoons, spinnerbaits and popping-cork shrimp imitations as bait flushes out of the grass. Fall brings the flounder stack at Sabine Pass: October-November jigging the channel edges with mud minnows is a regional institution: and bull reds crash the jetties the same months.

Two states, one lake

A Texas OR Louisiana license covers the open lake under the reciprocal agreement (banks and tributaries revert to their state: check details). Launches: Pleasure Island’s ramps on the Texas side, Sabine Pass, and Louisiana accesses off LA 82. The pass and jetties get genuinely rough on wind against tide: the protected marsh shorelines save many a blown-out day.

Why is Sabine less famous than Galveston?

Industry on the skyline and fewer guides: the fishing gives up nothing. Less pressure means better average trout: locals prefer the anonymity.
