The funnel

Sabine Pass is a textbook funnel fishery: all of Sabine Lake's bait and predators pass through one channel to the Gulf. The jetties extend miles seaward, the ship channel runs deep against them, and every tide change repositions the food chain. Trout, reds, flounder, sharks, and the odd tarpon in late summer: whatever swims the northwestern Gulf transits here.

Jetty rhythms

The Texas-side jetty fishes from boat or rock: trout on soft plastics along the wash, slot reds tight to the granite, bull reds and jack crevalle off the end in fall. Louisiana's side (license matters: know which state's water you float) often holds cleaner water on west winds. The channel's 40-ft drops hold winter trout when fronts push them deep.

Marsh math

Behind the pass, the Sabine marsh drains load with redfish on falling tides: Keith Lake and the cuts north of the pass are kayak country, with reds tailing in inches of water on calm mornings. October's flounder run through the pass is the region's calendar event: gigging lights at night, jig-and-gulp drifts by day.

Reading the border water

Sabine runs fresher than most Texas bays (two rivers feed it), so salinity lines move with rainfall: after floods, fish stack near the pass where salt holds. The Causeway reefs and the Pleasure Island riprap give wade-free structure options when the Gulf blows unfishable.
