The second-deepest lake in New England

Sebago drops to 316 feet: cold, clear glacial water that never fully warms, sustaining Maine's flagship lake trout (togue) fishery and the landlocked salmon tradition that named the species (Salmo sebago). Thirty minutes from Portland, the lake fishes like wilderness with a city skyline behind the trees.

Togue town

Lake trout dominate the deep structure: jigged over the 80-150-ft humps in summer, trolled at the thermocline with leadcore and spoons, and taken through the ice all winter (Sebago's derby culture peaks in February). The population runs strong enough that liberal limits encourage harvest of the eater class: the 20-lb-plus old-timers still patrol the deepest basins.

The landlocked salmon game defines April: streamer flies and sewn smelt trolled fast along the shorelines the first weeks after ice leaves, when salmon chase smelt runs into the river mouths (the Songo River run is the classic).
