The two-state run

The St. Joe drains Michigan's southwest corner through Indiana and back: its steelhead climb ladders at Berrien Springs, Buchanan and Niles on a run that never fully stops: fall fish from September, winter holders, spring spawners, and Skamania summer-runs that make July mornings chrome-plated. Few Great Lakes rivers spread the calendar this wide.

Skamania summers

The Skamania strain (summer-run steelhead stocked here famously) enters June-August: hot-water fish that hold in the dam tailraces and deep bends, eaten alive by spoons and spawn at dawn before the sun pushes them down. It is the Midwest's signature summer steelhead fishery: 90-degree days, 10-pound chrome.

The ladder circuit

Berrien Springs dam anchors the fishery: counts at the ladder, drift boats below, wade water at the county park: with Buchanan and Niles spreading pressure. Fall adds kings (September stack below the ladders), and the river's walleye (a quiet Indiana-side program) fill the fishless myths between runs.

Working the Joe

Flows run big and stained by trib standards (our Niles gauge tells the day): spawn bags and beads under floats dominate, plugs pull the deep bends, and the shore crowd works the tailraces. Michigan and Indiana split the river: licenses follow the bank: most action concentrates Michigan-side below Berrien.
