A 138-mile Ozark river with 44 Wild and Scenic miles, Oregon County, Missouri, fed by Greer Spring.

Fishing Eleven Point River: the full guide

A protected river

The Eleven Point River flows about 138 miles through the southern Missouri Ozarks to Arkansas, with 44 miles designated Wild and Scenic in 1968. Greer Spring, one of the largest springs in the Ozarks, roughly doubles the river’s flow where it enters and keeps the water cold enough for trout below it. Smallmouth bass hold throughout, and the river sees far fewer floaters than its famous neighbours.

Trout below Greer Spring

Missouri manages the reach below Greer Spring as trout water, stocking rainbows that hold in cold, clear runs through summer. The spring branch itself is closed to protect the resource, but the main river below it fishes well with nymphs, small streamers and spinners. Brown trout hold in the deeper water for anglers willing to work for them.

Smallmouth and floating

Smallmouth bass hold the bluff pools, gravel bars and wood throughout the river, taking tubes, crankbaits and topwater. Floating is the standard approach, with gravel bar camping and genuine solitude on weekdays. The Wild and Scenic designation limits development, and the river corridor stays remarkably quiet compared with the Current.

Oregon County logistics

Forest Service accesses at Greer Crossing, Turner Mill and Riverton serve the river, with outfitters providing canoes and shuttles. Alton and Thomasville are the local towns, with limited services. The remoteness is the appeal: this is one of Missouri’s quietest float rivers, and midweek trips can pass without seeing another boat.

Common questions

How important is Greer Spring?

It roughly doubles the river’s flow and keeps the water below it cold enough to support trout year-round.

Is it crowded?

Notably less than the Current or Jacks Fork: the Wild and Scenic designation and remoteness keep traffic light.

Can I fish the spring branch?

No: it is closed to protect the resource. Fish the main river below the confluence.
