Mammoth Spring and the trout reach

AGFC says Mammoth Spring releases about 9.8 million gallons an hour of 58-degree water into a 10-acre lake held by Dam #1. AGFC manages the trout fishery from 100 yards below Dam #1 at Mammoth Spring State Park to the mouth of Myatt Creek, about 12 miles in Fulton County. Flow there generally runs 206 to 694 cfs.

Stocking

AGFC has stocked rainbow trout on the Spring River since 1955 and brown trout regularly since about 1986-87. Its 2021-2026 management plan targets about 104,000 catchable rainbows and 10,000 browns a year. AGFC's March 2026 creel report adds that a historic flood in April 2025 washed trout out of the Jim Hinkle Spring River State Fish Hatchery and the federal Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery into the river.
