A river born from one spring

The Spring River flows about 57 miles through northern Arkansas from Mammoth Spring, which discharges roughly nine million gallons an hour at a constant 58 degrees. That single source keeps the river cold year-round, supporting trout in a state where most rivers run warm, and creating a fishery that stays consistent through Arkansas summers.

Trout in constant water

Rainbow trout are stocked heavily below Mammoth Spring and hold through the year in water that never warms: spinners, bait and flies all produce, with the river accessible by wading and floating. Brown trout hold the deeper water and reach good size. The constant temperature means the fishing changes far less seasonally than most trout water.

Smallmouth and the shoals

Below the trout reach the river warms slightly and smallmouth bass appear, along with walleye in the deeper holes.
