A high plains reservoir

Enders Reservoir covers roughly 1,700 acres at full pool on Frenchman Creek in Chase County, southwest Nebraska, a Bureau of Reclamation irrigation impoundment in open high plains country. It holds walleye, wiper, white bass, northern pike, crappie and channel catfish, with levels that swing substantially with the irrigation season and drought cycles.

Walleye and wiper

Walleye relate to the points, the old creek channel and the rock, taken on jigs, crawler harnesses and trolled crankbaits, best in low light and on windy shorelines. Wiper school and chase shad in open water, and finding surfacing fish in summer produces the most exciting fishing on the lake.

Levels and the seasons

Irrigation drawdown and drought can drop the reservoir substantially, concentrating fish and changing access dramatically from year to year. Check current levels before making the drive. Spring and fall fish best; summer heat and wind dominate the plains, and winter brings ice fishing when conditions allow.

Chase County logistics

Enders Reservoir State Recreation Area provides boat ramps, camping and shoreline access off Highway 6, with Imperial the nearest town.
