Fishing Lake Ogallala: the full guide

A tailwater lake

Lake Ogallala sits directly below Kingsley Dam, catching the cold bottom water released from Lake McConaughy above it. That cold water makes it the unlikeliest trout fishery in Nebraska: rainbow trout are stocked heavily and grow well, joined by brown trout, walleye, wipers and yellow perch that drop through from the big lake. It covers only 320 acres, which makes it approachable in a way McConaughy never is.

Trout in a prairie state

Rainbows are stocked through the year and take PowerBait, small spinners, spoons and flies from both bank and boat. The cold water from the dam keeps them healthy through summer, when the rest of Nebraska’s waters are far too warm. Winter is a prime season here: the lake stays partly open below the dam and offers trout fishing when everything else is frozen.

The bonus species

Walleye, wipers and white bass wash through the dam from McConaughy and hold in the deeper water, providing surprise catches for trout anglers. Yellow perch school in the shallows. The tailwater below Lake Ogallala on the North Platte adds river fishing for the same mix, with trout and walleye holding in the current seams.

Big Mac-area logistics

Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area provides ramps, camping and extensive bank access around the small lake, all within Nebraska’s most popular recreation complex. Most visitors are focused on McConaughy above, which keeps the little lake quieter. Ogallala town is minutes away, and Interstate 80 runs just south.
