A reservoir with pedigree

Great Sacandaga Lake floods 29 miles of the Sacandaga valley in the southern Adirondacks, built in 1930 for flood control on the Hudson. Its fishery is one of New York’s best-known: walleye above all, with northern pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, yellow perch and panfish. It has produced state-record-class fish over the years and remains a serious destination for walleye anglers who like big water.

Walleye through the seasons

Spring walleye stage near the tributary mouths and rocky shorelines: jigs and minnows after the season opens. Summer moves them to the main-lake humps, points and 15-30-foot flats where drifting worm harnesses and trolling crankbaits produce, best in low light and on windy days. Fall brings a strong jig bite on the deeper structure, and winter ice fishing for walleye and perch is a regional institution.

Pike and bass

Northern pike hunt the weedy bays and the flooded timber edges: big spoons, spinnerbaits and dead-bait rigs take fish through the ice as well as in open water. Smallmouth hold the rocky points and shoals, largemouth the weedier coves. The lake fluctuates significantly with flood-control operations, which changes shoreline structure through the year.
