Erie County’s biggest tributary

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission describes Elk Creek as the largest and most popular of the Erie County tributary streams. It starts south of McKean, passes under I-79, Route 98 and I-90, runs through Girard and Lake City, and enters Lake Erie about half a mile west of State Route 18 in Girard Township. The PFBC stocks it with steelhead and brown trout.

Steelhead timing

DCNR calls Elk Creek a world-class shallow-stream steelhead fishery, with runs from late fall to early spring. In early fall, the PFBC notes, steelhead may not get past the Route 5 bridge; they move upstream as the season goes on, and by winter they can usually be found as far up as the I-79 McKean exit. The PFBC rates Elk a large stream that needs two to four days after rain to drop back to fishable levels.

Low water at the mouth
