A harbor with history

Wickford Harbor sits on the west shore of Narragansett Bay in North Kingstown, a colonial village with one of the best-preserved eighteenth-century streetscapes in New England. The harbor and the coves around it hold striped bass, bluefish, tautog, scup and summer flounder, fished from shore, small boats and kayaks.

Stripers and blues

Striped bass work the harbor mouth, the rocky shorelines and the flats on moving water, best fished at dawn, dusk and through the night from late spring into fall. Bluefish push in during summer and turn the fishing violent and fast. Live eels, plugs, soft plastics and flies all take fish: the tide matters more than the lure.

Tautog and bottom fish

Rocky structure around the harbor and nearby Wickford Cove holds tautog, best in spring and again in fall on green crabs and clams. Scup fill the bottom through summer and provide easy action, and summer flounder work the sandy channels. It is a genuinely varied fishery in a small area.

North Kingstown logistics

Access is via Wickford village, the town docks and Wilson Park, with a boat ramp serving the harbor and small-craft launching for kayaks. The village provides tackle, food and parking. Narragansett Bay opens up immediately outside, giving boat anglers far more water within a short run.
