A working point

Point Judith juts into Block Island Sound at the mouth of Narragansett Bay, home to Rhode Island’s largest commercial fishing fleet and to some of the state’s best shore fishing. The lighthouse, the harbor of refuge walls, the Point Judith Pond breachway and the surrounding beaches all hold fish, and the current running past the point concentrates bait through the season.

Stripers and blues

Striped bass work the rocks around the point and the breachway current, best at night and around tide changes: eels, plugs and soft plastics. Bluefish blitz through in summer and fall, chasing bait along the beaches and into the pond. The harbor walls give access to deep water within casting range, unusual on this coast and popular accordingly.

Albies and the fall run

Late summer and fall bring false albacore and bonito close to the point and the breachway, drawing fly and light-tackle anglers who chase them along the shore. The fall striper run follows, with fish moving through in numbers from September into November. Fluke and scup fill the summer months for anglers fishing bait around the structure.

Narragansett logistics

Galilee and Jerusalem flank the breachway with ramps, charters and the ferry to Block Island. Shore access includes the harbor walls, the lighthouse area and the state beaches. Parking fills in summer: arrive early or fish at night, which is when the best striper fishing happens anyway. Narragansett provides tackle shops and services.
