A great shallow pond

Worden Pond covers roughly 1,000 acres in South Kingstown, the largest freshwater lake wholly within Rhode Island. It averages only a few feet deep with a soft bottom and extensive weed growth, which makes it warm, fertile and productive: largemouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, black crappie and bullheads all thrive, and the Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area protects much of the surrounding land.

Fishing shallow water

The whole pond is a weed bed in summer: work frogs, weightless soft plastics and buzzbaits over the pads and grass, and target the few deeper holes and the channel toward the Chipuxet River inlet when heat pushes fish down. Spring is the strongest season, with bass moving into the shallows early because the water warms fast. Pickerel are abundant and hit anything that moves.

Panfish and the swamp

Yellow perch and crappie school along the weed edges and around any wood, providing steady action for light tackle and excellent ice fishing when the pond freezes: it is shallow enough to make ice reliably in cold winters. The Great Swamp surrounding the pond is a birding destination and adds a wild feel unusual for southern New England.

A state boat ramp on the north shore provides the main access, with the Chipuxet and Usquepaug rivers offering paddle access into the pond.
