Red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), called redfish across the South, is a bronze inshore drum with a black spot near the tail, fished on grass flats, oyster bars, marsh creeks and beaches from the Chesapeake around Florida to Texas. The tide predictions on this page come from NOAA station 8775870, Bob Hall Pier, Corpus Christi, on the Gulf beach of North Padre Island in Nueces County. Farther south, Padre Island National Seashore runs along the island, with the Gulf beach on one side and the Laguna Madre on the other.

The Laguna Madre

The National Park Service calls the Laguna Madre of Texas one of six hypersaline coastal lagoons in the world, saltier than the ocean, and says that together with the Laguna Madre de Tamaulipas in Mexico it is the largest of them. NPS adds that the lagoon holds almost 80 percent of all Texas seagrass beds and that federal land and large ranches protect more than 70 percent of its shoreline.

Bird Island Basin

Bird Island Basin Boat Ramp is the only developed boat ramp in the national seashore. NPS says it is busy early in the morning, especially on weekends and holidays, as anglers launch for the Laguna Madre and farther south into Baffin Bay. It has a paved ramp with a small dock, a gravel launch area for paddle craft and a small pier with fish-cleaning tables.
