The Lower Laguna Madre runs so clear it fishes like the Bahamas: poled skiffs and waders sight-cast to redfish and black drum over sand and grass in two feet of gin. The flats north of the causeway (Gas Well Flats, Three Islands) are the time-honored program: shrimp imitations or small gold spoons, long leads, and the discipline not to slap casts at nervous fish.

The Lower Laguna grows Texas' biggest speckled trout: slow-sinking twitchbaits over potholes in winter and spring produce 28-plus-inch fish for the patient.
