A river through a college town

The Logan River flows out of the Bear River Range through Logan Canyon to Cache Valley in northern Utah, a cold limestone-influenced stream holding wild brown trout, rainbows, mountain whitefish and Bonneville cutthroat, the state fish, in the upper reaches. Utah State University sits at its mouth, and the canyon road makes access simple along most of its length.

Browns and cutthroat

The lower canyon holds wild browns in pocket water and pools, fished with nymphs, streamers and dries: the fish are educated given the access but genuinely wild. Upstream toward Tony Grove and the headwaters, Bonneville cutthroat become more common in smaller water, with special regulations protecting them in places.

Seasons and flows

Runoff holds the river high into June; the fishing opens as flows drop and stays good into fall, with the canyon holding cool water through summer. Winter fishing is viable in the lower canyon on warm afternoons. Irrigation diversions reduce flows in the valley reaches below the canyon mouth.

Cache County logistics

Highway 89 through Logan Canyon provides constant access with pullouts, Forest Service campgrounds and trailheads. Logan sits at the canyon mouth with every service. First Dam, Second Dam and Third Dam are small impoundments in the lower canyon with their own stocked fisheries and easy family access.
