A coldwater lake in the Kingdom

Seymour Lake covers 1,769 acres in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom near Morgan, deep and cold enough to sustain a genuine coldwater fishery in a state with few of them. Landlocked salmon and lake trout are the marquee species, joined by rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and pickerel. The setting is quiet farm and forest country close to the Canadian border.

Salmon and lakers

Ice-out in late April brings landlocked salmon near the surface, where trolling streamers and smelt imitations in the top twenty feet produces the year’s most exciting fishing. Lake trout hold deeper and take trolled spoons and jigged tubes through summer at 50-90 feet. Fall brings both back shallower, with September and October offering strong shoreline opportunity.

Bass and the ice

Smallmouth bass work the rocky shorelines and drop-offs from June onward, an underfished component of the lake. Yellow perch school over the flats, and ice fishing is a serious tradition here: salmon, lake trout and perch through the hard water, with the Northeast Kingdom’s cold winters making reliable ice.

Morgan-area logistics

A state fishing access provides a ramp and shoreline, with limited development around the lake and few services in the immediate area. Island Pond and Newport are the nearest towns. The lake is close enough to Lake Memphremagog and the Clyde River that a multi-water trip is straightforward, and the Kingdom’s quiet is a large part of the appeal.
