Fishing Lake Memphremagog: the full guide

A border lake

Lake Memphremagog stretches 30 miles from Newport, Vermont north into Quebec, with about a quarter of its water on the American side. It is deep, cold and productive: landlocked salmon and lake trout in the main basin, walleye that Vermont manages carefully, smallmouth bass along the rock, plus rainbow trout, perch and panfish. The international border runs across the water, and rules differ on each side.

Salmon, lakers and walleye

Ice-out brings salmon and lake trout near the surface for trolling streamers and smelt imitations, with the Vermont end fishing well in April and May. Summer sends them deep, 60-100 feet for lakers. Walleye hold the rocky structure and points and are the subject of restoration work: check current limits, which have changed as the population recovered. Smallmouth work the shoreline rock all summer.

The tributaries

The Clyde, Barton and Black rivers all enter at the Vermont end, and each holds its own runs: the Clyde is famous for the fall landlocked salmon run, while the Barton and Black add spring rainbow and fall salmon fishing. Fishing the lake and its tributaries in the same trip is the standard plan for anglers based in Newport.

Ramps at Newport, Prouty Beach and other access points serve the Vermont end. Fishing into Canadian waters requires a Quebec license and border-crossing compliance: know exactly where the line is.
