Alaska State Parks describes Kenai Lake as a large, glacially fed lake at the headwaters of the Kenai River, which leaves it at Cooper Landing and flows 80 miles to Cook Inlet (ADF&G). The lake lies within the Kenai River Special Management Area, but the river's motor restrictions do not apply on the lake itself.

Resident fish only

ADF&G closes Kenai Lake and its tributaries to all salmon fishing year-round, kings included, so the lake is fished for lake trout, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout, with burbot and Arctic grayling also covered by the drainage rules. In the open lake away from the inlets, bait and multiple hooks are allowed all year.

Within a quarter mile of every inlet stream, and in the quarter mile above the Sterling Highway bridge at the outlet, the lake closes to all fishing from May 1 to June 10, and only one unbaited, single-hook artificial lure or fly is allowed there the rest of the year.
