The Fish and Wildlife Service gives Skilak Lake 25,000 acres, among the largest lakes in Alaska. ADF&G calls the 17.3 miles of river from Kenai Lake to Skilak the Upper Kenai, and the 19.5 miles from Skilak's outlet to Naptowne Rapids the Middle River. Glacial silt gives the Kenai River its blue-green shade and cloudy look.

Lake trout and Dolly Varden

ADF&G says lake trout are wild, year-round residents of Skilak and Kenai lakes and are sometimes found in the river at the lake outlets. Little is known about their numbers; in summer they are thought to hold in deeper water, and in spring and fall they move into shallower areas and the outlets. Resident and sea-run Dolly Varden overwinter in Kenai and Skilak lakes.

Rules at the lake and the outlet

ADF&G's 2026 Kenai regulations close Skilak Lake to king salmon fishing; within half a mile of the upper Kenai River inlet, bait and multiple hooks are allowed year-round. From August 1 to December 31, the river from the swan sanctuary sign at the outlet down to river mile 47 is closed to fishing from an anchored vessel. The refuge limits motorboats on the lake to four-stroke or direct fuel-injection motors and bans motorboats from the outlet to river mile 47 from March 15 to June 14.
