A lake on the Kenai

Skilak Lake covers about 24,000 acres on the Kenai River within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, a glacial lake whose silt gives the river below its famous turquoise color. It holds lake trout, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden and sockeye salmon passing through, in cold water surrounded by mountains and spruce forest with almost no development.

Lake trout and rainbows

Lake trout hold the deeper water and take trolled spoons and plugs or jigged tubes, with fish moving shallower after ice-out and in fall. Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden work the shorelines, inlets and the outlet area where the Kenai River leaves the lake: that outlet is a genuinely productive spot, particularly when sockeye are running.

Wind and the water

Skilak is notorious for wind: it funnels down the valley and builds dangerous waves quickly on cold, glacial water, and boats have been lost here. Small craft should stay near shore and watch the weather constantly. The glacial silt limits visibility, concentrating fish near clearer inflows and the outlet.

Refuge campgrounds and boat launches serve the lake via Skilak Lake Road off the Sterling Highway, with the road rough in places. Facilities are basic.
