Kenai River rules vary by section, species and date, and ADF&G changes them by emergency order; read the Southcentral regulations and current emergency orders before each trip. From Kenai Lake to Cook Inlet

ADF&G calls the Kenai the most heavily fished river in Alaska. The glacial river leaves Kenai Lake at Cooper Landing and runs 17.3 miles to Skilak Lake, a stretch that includes the fast water of the Kenai Canyon. Below Skilak it passes Naptowne Rapids and Soldotna before reaching Cook Inlet near the city of Kenai; the last 12 miles are tidal.

King salmon in 2026

ADF&G forecast the 2026 Kenai king salmon runs below the lower end of their escapement goals and announced preseason restrictions. For 2026 it closed king salmon fishing, including catch-and-release, in Upper Cook Inlet salt waters north of Bluff Point from May 1 through August 15.
