Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The Gwydir at Pallamallawa
Pallamallawa is the small settlement on the Gwydir River east of Moree, where the river leaves the slopes and spreads onto the northern plains under river red gums before breaking into the channels and wetlands of the lower Gwydir. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Gwydir at Pallamallawa, the cod in the snags and the deep holes on lures and bait, the yellowbelly on shrimp and worms in the warm months; freshwater catfish are protected west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossing and the reserves around Pallamallawa give access to the Gwydir, and the reaches upstream toward Gravesend are reached from the road crossings. A kayak covers the snag-lined bends.
Planning a visit
Moree, a short drive west, has tackle, supplies and accommodation. Bring cod lures and bait, and check the releases from Copeton Dam, which shape the river.
The river through the year
At Pallamallawa the Gwydir carries releases from Copeton Dam for the irrigation farms of the Moree plains, so its summer level rises and falls with deliveries as well as rain, and the chart shows those steps. Below the town the river breaks into channels and the Mehi, Carole and Gingham watercourses, and big floods spread into the lower Gwydir wetlands, one of the great waterbird breeding grounds of inland New South Wales. Cod feed through summer and autumn in the snags and deep holes; golden perch bite best on a rising river in the heat. Winters are cool and slow.
