Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The Namoi at Mollee
Mollee Weir holds a pool on the Namoi River downstream of Narrabri, in the cotton country toward Wee Waa, where the river winds under red gums between irrigation farms. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Mollee supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Namoi at Narrabri and Boggabri have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Namoi below Narrabri, cod in the weir pool’s snags and the deep holes, yellowbelly on shrimp and worms through the warm months; freshwater catfish are protected west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The public access around the weir pool and the crossings downstream of Narrabri give bank access to the Namoi. DPIRD closes waters around weirs and fishways, so check the closed-water rules before fishing close to the structure.
Planning a visit
Narrabri, upstream, has tackle, supplies and accommodation, and Wee Waa is downstream. Bring cod gear and bait, and plan for the heat of the western summer.
The river through the year
Below Narrabri the Namoi runs through cotton country, and its level follows irrigation releases from Keepit and Split Rock dams, the diversions of the farms and the rain on the slopes upstream; Mollee Weir holds a pool that stays when the river is low. Cod feed through summer and autumn in the weir pool’s snags and the deep holes below, and golden perch bite best on rising water in the heat. Big floods spread across the plains toward Wee Waa. Winter is slow, and the chart shows when a release or a fresh is coming through.
