The reach
The Murrumbidgee at Narrandera is the Riverina’s river at its best, wide and timbered through the red gum forests of the Murrumbidgee Valley Regional Park, with the town’s river beach and parks, the Narrandera fish hatchery that stocks the natives, the John Lake Centre, and river camps along the forest tracks upstream and down. It is cod and perch water with a hatchery on its bank, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Narrandera supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the snags, the undercut banks and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; golden perch are the everyday fish from spring to autumn; silver perch and trout cod are protected and go back; and carp are numerous under the DPIRD rules. The hatchery publishes what it stocks into the river and the lakes.
Where to fish it
The town beach and the parks give bank access, the forest tracks of the regional park lead to river camps where the bank fishing is the trip, and the ramps put a boat onto reaches of timber in both directions; the deep outside bends and the snags are the cod water, and the forest lagoons fish for perch when the river is up. The fish hatchery and the John Lake Centre are worth the visit.
