The reach
The Murrumbidgee at Wagga Wagga is the river through the biggest inland city in New South Wales, wide and sandy with Wagga Beach in the middle of town, the Hampden and Wiradjuri bridges, river parks and walking tracks along the levee, and long reaches of snags, sand bars and red gums upstream toward Gundagai and downstream toward Narrandera. It is cod and perch water in a city, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Wagga supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the snags, the rock walls at the bridges and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule the species card computes; golden perch are the everyday fish from spring to autumn; silver perch and the protected natives go back; trout cod, protected, are caught and released here; and carp are numerous under the DPIRD rules.
Where to fish it
Wagga Beach, the levee track and the river parks give bank access through the city, the bridge pylons hold cod at night, and the ramps at Wagga Beach and Oura put a boat onto reaches of timber upstream and down; the flood-plain lagoons off the river fish for perch when the river is high. Night fishing with surface lures along the town snags is the summer method.
