The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

Ben Dor Weir
Ben Dor Weir holds a pool on Macintyre Brook, the stream that runs from Coolmunda Dam through Inglewood and Whetstone toward the Dumaresq on the New South Wales border, in the dry, open grazing country of the Queensland Murray-Darling. It is one of the weirs the Queensland Government stocks and lists for the permit scheme, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge on the brook at Ben Dor supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
The Queensland Government lists golden perch, Murray cod and silver perch as stocked at Ben Dor. Golden perch, yellowbelly to most anglers, are the everyday fish of the pool, taken on shrimp, worms and lures around the timber; Murray cod hold in the deeper snags and are the prize; silver perch school in the open water. Murray cod are closed from 1 August to 31 October in Queensland’s Murray-Darling waters, and Ben Dor is not one of the exempt dams; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The banks of the weir pool are fished from the access points off the roads through the brook country, casting to the fallen timber and the undercut banks, and a kayak or a small boat covers the length of the pool where the cod sit on the snags. Below the weir, the brook’s runs and holes fish for yellowbelly after a flow, under the same Murray-Darling rules.
Planning a visit
Ben Dor is reached along the country roads west of Inglewood and Whetstone in the Queensland border country, and the towns along the Cunningham Highway, Inglewood and Goondiwindi, have supplies and accommodation. Bring the permit, cod lures and bait for yellowbelly, and water and shade in summer, when the border country is hot and dry.
