Fishing Lake Wivenhoe: the full guide
The lake
Lake Wivenhoe is the Brisbane River dam north-west of the city, the largest storage in south-east Queensland, built for water supply and flood mitigation and run by Seqwater with recreation areas at Logan’s Inlet, Cormorant Bay, Hamon Cove and the wall, ramps for the boats the authority allows, and a shoreline that runs for kilometres through drowned timber and open bays. It is bass and golden perch water on a big scale, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are stocked and school in the deep water off the points and the old river channel in winter, worked with blades, plastics and ice jigs, and spread along the edges and the timber in summer; golden perch are stocked and fish the points and the timber from spring to autumn; Mary River cod are stocked and protected, and go back; saratoga and silver perch are present; and red claw are a pot fishery. The stocking group publishes its releases. Seqwater restricts boating to electric and low-powered craft on much of the lake.
Where to fish it
Logan’s Inlet and Cormorant Bay have the ramps and the bank access, and the timbered arms up the Brisbane River and the points along the western shore are the bass and perch water; the old channel off the wall is where the winter schools sit. The lake is big and open and a plan for the wind matters; bank fishing from the recreation areas works at dusk in the warm months.
Reading the report
