The base license is often not the whole ticket: trout stamps (a dozen states), salmon/steelhead cards (the Northwest), saltwater registries (the coasts, sometimes free but mandatory), Great Lakes stamps, and second-rod validations. Exemptions worth knowing
Free fishing days (every state runs 1-4 per year: perfect for introducing someone): senior and veteran discounts: kids' thresholds: public piers in some states (California famously): and private-pond exemptions in much of the South. None of these excuse ignoring seasons and limits: exempt anglers still follow the rules.
Border waters and reciprocity
Shared waters usually share licenses: either state's paper works on the water itself (Pymatuning, Big Stone, Gaston, Chatuge, the Columbia's mainstem): but tributaries and banks revert to the state you stand in. Nonresident math
Short-trip anglers: buy the 1-3-day nonresident permit (usually cheap): trip-per-year anglers: the annual nonresident often pays for itself at two visits: multi-state road-trippers: build the stack per state, there is no national license.
