A dam trades a river's seasons for a schedule: cold, stable water that grows trout in the South and concentrates river fish everywhere: in exchange for flows that swing on electricity demand. The fish adapted decades ago: rising water washes food and triggers feeding: your job is knowing the timetable they already do.

Stage one: low water (the wading window)

Zero generation exposes the river's skeleton: shoals wadeable, fish concentrated in the remaining slots and pools, presentations technical (clear, thin water: long leaders, small stuff). This is the fly angler's stage on southern tailwaters. Know your exit points before you cross anything: the horn or a sudden push of cold water means leave mid-cast, not after one more.

Stage two: the rise (the dinner bell)

The first hour of rising water is the tailwater's pre-front feed: dislodged sowbugs, scuds and baitfish flush downstream and everything eats. Fish it from the bank or boat as the wade water disappears: bigger flies and baits, drifted seams, moving fish. On striper and walleye tailraces, the ramp-up minutes are the day's trophy window: be rigged before the turbines spin.

Stage three: full generation (the boat game)

High water pushes fish to the edges: current seams, eddies behind points, flooded willow lines: and turns the fishery into drift-boat or power-boat water. Side-drifted baits, deep streamers on sink tips, plugs held in the seams. Big-brown hunters live for this stage: the giants that never show at low water eat 6-inch streamers against the banks at full flow.

Safety: the water is on a switch

Tailwater drownings share one story: an angler mid-river when generation started. Rules that prevent it: know the schedule but trust the river (schedules change without notice), pick exit routes before wading in, watch for the rise's tells (debris lines moving, bubbles, cold push), and never wade alone below a dam you don't know. Respect turns the artificial tide into an asset.
