Why the water moves, which tide stage actually feeds fish, and how to read a tide chart like a local.

The two-minute physics

The moon (mostly) and sun (partly) pull the ocean into bulges: as Earth rotates through them, your coast rises and falls: usually twice a day. New and full moons align sun and moon: bigger 'spring' tides. Quarter moons oppose them: smaller 'neaps.' That is genuinely all the theory a fisherman needs: the craft is in what moving water does to bait.

Why moving water means feeding fish

Current is a conveyor: it pushes bait past ambush points, drains shrimp and crabs off flooded flats, and concentrates everything at chokepoints: inlets, creek mouths, points, bridge pilings. Predators are engineers about energy: they hold in soft water beside the flow and let the tide deliver dinner. Slack water: high or low: is when the conveyor stops and most inshore fishing goes quiet.

Incoming versus outgoing: the eternal debate

Neither is universally better: each feeds different spots. Incoming floods clean, cool ocean water onto flats and pushes fish shallow to hunt: sight-fishing and shoreline bites love it. Outgoing drains the marsh and funnels everything through drains and creek mouths: ambush fishing loves it. The local answer is always spot-specific: the honest rule is 'fish the last two hours of whichever tide moves water past your spot.'

Reading the chart like a local

Four numbers matter: the times of high and low (fish the two hours around the changes at chokepoints), the range (bigger range, stronger current, stronger bite: spring tides), and the height baseline (a 'negative low' empties flats for sight-fishing: a big high floods spartina for tailing reds). Wind: the tide's editor

Sustained wind adds or subtracts real water: an onshore blow can hold a falling tide up; offshore wind can turn a normal low into a mudflat. Locals adjust the chart by feel: you can adjust it by checking reported water levels against predictions. When wind and tide push the same direction, current doubles: chokepoints turn on hard.

Tides far from the sea
