The city stretch

The Grand runs through downtown Grand Rapids as Michigan's most urban serious fishery: steelhead stacking below the Sixth Street dam October-April, fall kings crowding the ladder in September, and a fishing culture that waders share with lunch-break locals. The dam's future (removal debates continue) may change the river: for now the city fishery defines it.

Steelhead seasons

Fall-run fish arrive with October rains and winter over: eggs and beads through the deep runs, jigs under floats in the slower water, swung streamers for the faithful. Spring's spawn run (March-April) brings the year's numbers: the gravel above and below town fills with chrome: fish the travel water behind the beds, not the beds.

More than chrome

Summer turns the Grand to a warm-water river: smallmouth on every rock seam through town, flathead cats in the log-jammed bends downstream, and walleye from Grand Ledge down (the lower river toward Grand Haven runs a legitimate jig-and-crawler fishery). The spring sucker and quillback runs feed a bow-and-net culture all their own.

Access and the ladder

Public access threads the whole river: Sixth Street's walls and ladder viewing, Riverside and Millennium parks, and drift-boat launches spacing the runs to Lake Michigan. Grand Haven's pier heads bracket the system: staging salmon in August, perch schools, and the big-lake connection that keeps the river stocked with possibility.
