The mile that matters

The Oswego drains the Finger Lakes system into Ontario through one urban mile below the Varick dam: and that mile concentrates everything the big lake sends: September's king stampede, October browns, and steelhead that hold in the heavy water all winter. It is Pulaski's quieter sibling: bigger water, smaller crowds.

Wall fishing

The river fishes from its walls and linear park: heavy spinning gear lobbing egg sacs and beads into the seams, jigs worked the slack edges, and the high-water discipline the dam's releases demand (flows swing fast: our Lock 7 gauge is the safety check). Boats drift the lower harbor: the wall culture owns the rapids.

The season stack

Late August: kings stage the harbor. September: the run fills the mile (combat lite: the walls spread anglers better than Salmon River gravel). October-November: browns and fresh steelhead on the eggs. December-March: the winter steelhead hold (the Oswego rarely locks: its flow keeps water open when Pulaski freezes). April: drop-backs feed and the mile empties.
