A working Finger Lake

Owasco Lake runs 11 miles south from Auburn, 177 feet deep and the sixth largest of the Finger Lakes. It carries the standard regional mix: lake trout as the dominant coldwater species, brown trout and rainbows in the upper column, smallmouth on the rock and gravel, plus largemouth, pickerel and panfish in the weedier shallows. Its modest size makes it approachable for anglers learning to fish deep water.

Trout tactics

Lake trout hold the deep basins: trolling with lead core and spoons at 50-90 feet works through summer, and after ice-out fish move within 30 feet where casting and shallow trolling reach them. Brown trout patrol the shoreline drop-offs and take stickbaits trolled shallow in spring: April and early May are the best weeks for a good brown. Fall returns lakers to the shoals.

Warm-water options

Smallmouth work the rocky points and the drop-offs along both shores from June onward. The north end near Auburn and the shallow bays hold largemouth, pickerel and panfish, giving families and light-tackle anglers a straightforward option when the deep-water bite is slow. Winter perch fishing is popular when the north end freezes.

Emerson Park at the north end in Auburn offers a launch and shoreline access; a state launch serves the south end near Moravia. Auburn supplies tackle and lodging. The lake sits within an hour of Syracuse and Ithaca, so it sees steady but manageable traffic, with weekday mornings the calm choice.
